Is the night cough settling or sticking?
CoughWise records the night on your iPhone. In the morning you get a count of possible cough-like sounds, laid out hour by hour, and the whole night to play back and check for yourself.
Get CoughWise on the App Store
Recorded and analyzed on your iPhone. Audio never uploaded. No account. The App Store privacy label reads “Data Not Collected”.
There is no CoughWise server holding a copy of your nights. Saved audio clears itself after 7, 30 or 90 days, whichever you pick, unless you star the night. You can delete a single night from its report, or everything at once with Delete All Local Data in More.
New in CoughWise 1.3
- A doctor-visit summary. Page one puts your nights on a single page: how many you recorded and how many were complete, partial or unread; the median count of possible cough-like sounds per complete night, the lowest and the highest, and which night was highest; the median per hour; a clock-hour chart with a line naming the busiest two-hour window (between 2 am and 4 am, say); your recent complete nights as bars; and your notes. Page two lists every night, and a CSV comes with it. You can preview page one, built from your own nights and stamped PREVIEW, before paying. Premium exports it.
- A note for each night, in your own words: a cold in the house, a new pillow, the heating on. Free.
- Star a night and its recording is kept past the automatic clean-up. Free.
- Delete a single night from its report. Free.
- More reliable listening. On some iPhones, listening could fail to start because the microphone connected with no sound coming in. CoughWise now checks that sound is really arriving, and if it isn’t, tries another way in by itself.
- The offer of reminders is now a card in the morning report instead of a pop-up over it.
How a night works
- Before bed. Tap Start on the Tonight tab and leave the iPhone near the bed, screen down, on the charger, microphone uncovered. The listening screen shows how long it has been recording and how many possible cough-like sounds it has counted so far. In the morning, press and hold to stop.
- If the night goes wrong. The recording is written to the phone as it goes. A crash, a phone call or a flat battery at 4am costs you the rest of the night, not the whole of it. A night that ended early is labelled partial. A night CoughWise could not analyse says exactly that, instead of showing a zero.
- In the morning. The whole night sits on one sound timeline you can play from the start or scrub to any point. Under it, an hour lane shows when the counted sounds happened. The report also says how many bursts they came in, because coughing tends to arrive in runs, and a plain-language summary is written on the phone.
- Check it with your own ears. The loudest moments in the recording are ranked for you to play. They are there to listen to and are never counted as coughs. If a counted sound was the dog shaking its collar or someone in the next room, tap “Not a cough” and the night recalculates on the spot. Restore puts it back.
About the count, plainly
CoughWise counts possible cough-like sounds. It may miss some and may count other sounds. The number is an estimate for awareness, not a measurement or a medical assessment, and the morning report says so as well as this page. Sensitivity (Low, Default or High, in More) changes future nights only.
What it is good for is the pattern: whether the busy hours are 2am or just after you lie down, and whether this week looks like last week. The appointment checklist covers what to write down next to it.
